After a fork, the same address can exist on two branches with different balances and nonces. Both sides may still report the same chain id. A lock that is safe on one branch can be unsafe if replayed on the other. A number in a wallet UI is not the same thing as a completed counterparty-backed recovery.
It coordinates a hash-timed ownership exchange (a swap, not a mint): your balance on the source branch goes down and the destination goes up. Four legs — lock, counterparty lock, claim (reveals a secret), counter-claim — or refund if someone walks away. Your deadline is longer than theirs. A willing counterparty is required.
